The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is one of the most beautiful and spiritual treks in the Indian Himalayas. It takes you to the source of River Ganga, called Gaumukh, and then to Tapovan, a peaceful high-altitude meadow at the foot of the mighty Mount Shivling.

History & Importance
Gaumukh means “Cow’s mouth” in Sanskrit. It is believed that the glacier from where the Ganga river originates looks like a cow’s mouth — hence the name. According to Hindu mythology, the holy River Ganga flows from the locks of Lord Shiva, and this trek follows that sacred path.
Tapovan (meaning “forest of meditation”) has been a place of meditation for sages for hundreds of years. Even today, many sadhus (holy men) live here in extreme conditions to connect with spirituality.
So this trek is not just for adventure — it’s a spiritual journey, close to nature and peace.
All About Gaumukh Tapovan Trek (Day-wise Itinerary)
Before You Start
- You need to take permission from the forest department to start this trek.
- A local guide is mandatory and must be hired through an agency. The agency can also provide a porter if you need help with luggage.
Day 1: Trek from Gangotri to Bhojbasa (Approx. 14 km)
Your Gaumukh Tapovan trek starts from Gangotri, and the trail begins with a flight of steps.
After walking for 1–2 kilometers, you’ll start seeing the beautiful Bhagirathi River flowing alongside the path. Around 2–3 km into the trek, mobile network disappears, and you won’t get any signal for the next 2–3 days. So, inform your family in advance.
Also you can plan your first day upto chirbasa, which is aroud 9 KM.
You will soon reach the entry gate of Gangotri National Park. Here you’ll have to show your trekking permit, which costs approx. ₹150 per person. Forest officers will also check your bags to ensure you’re not carrying excess plastic—this is to keep the trail eco-friendly. Around the 3 km mark, you may spot some wild fruits growing along the trail.
After around 4 km, you’ll arrive at a place called Devgaad, known for its big water stream. A temporary wooden bridge is used to cross this stream.
Soon after Devgaad, you’ll reach chirbasa, a popular rest point with breathtaking views of the valley. If you don’t want to travel more for the day, You can have your night stay here too.
About 2 km ahead, you’ll find Bhangulbas, where you start getting your first clear views of the Himalayan peaks.
Continue trekking and after about 9–10 km, you reach Chirbasa. This place is named after the Chir (pine) trees that grow here. In Chirbasa, you’ll have to cross a river again, this time walking over big rocks and a wooden bridge. Chirbasa also has a small shop or dhaba where you can enjoy Maggi, parathas, and tea.
Camping is allowed here, and if you stay, you can enjoy a peaceful sunrise or sunset by the Bhagirathi River bank.
Finally, after trekking a total of about 14 km, you reach Bhojbasa, the most common overnight stop for trekkers.

Day 2: Bhojbasa to Gaumukh Glacier to Tapovan (Approx. 8 km)
You have to start your trek early, around 6:00 tob 7:00 AM. You need to cross the Bhagirathi river using a small ropeway trolley, which begins operation around 8:00 AM.
After trekking for 4 km, you reach the Gaumukh Glacier, believed to be the origin of the Ganga River.
From Gaumukh, the trail becomes more difficult. After 3 more km of rocky terrain, you finally reach Tapovan. The last 200–300 meters of the trek are the most challenging, as you have to climb over large rocks.

Best Time to Visit Gaumukh Tapovan Trek
May to Mid-June: Pleasant weather, snow starts melting, trails are open.
Mid-September to October: Clear skies and good views of Himalayan peaks. Monsoon ends, so trails are dry and safe.
Avoid July–August (Monsoon): Risk of landslides and slippery trails.
November to April: Due to Heavy snowfall and routes closed, its not possible to have a gangotri gaumukh tapovan trek
